CHAPTER 21
I feet like throwing up the whole ride to Ben's. My stomach is twisted in knots and my heart is shattered. I keep telling myself that I'm doing the right thing. That Knox would forgive me, knowing full well that he'd never forgive me. My mind is racing trying to think of ways to keep us together.
We get to Ben's apartment and I use my key to get in. I go to our room, my eyes leaking tears. "Are you sure you want to do this?" Jacob asks again.
I nod, not trusting my voice. I don't even make sure I have everything, I just grab the garbage bag and my duffle bag and leave the room. I walk to the kitchen and take out a piece of paper and pen. Writing, I'm so sorry. I love you so much. Love always, El.
I know this won't help ease his mind or stop him from hating me, but I just can't leave without letting him know one last time that I love him. I take the note and put it on our bed and go back to the kitchen. Jacob has both my bags in his hands and we leave the apartment. I lock the deadbolt and slide the key under the door. It's done. I can to do this.
I turn away from the door taking with me all my happy memories with Knox. I feel like collapsing, Jacob puts his arm around me supporting some of my weight. I can't take anything else. Yet, I have so much more to muddle through. I have to pick a place to go, find a place to live and get a job. I have to keep going, that's all there is to it. I don't have a choice. I have to keep breathing, knowing Knox will move on and forward with his life without me.
At Jacobs car he puts my bags in the backseat and I get in the front. I hear his phone ring and then it's silenced. I'm sure it's Knox, that's why he didn't answer. He gets in the car and buckles his seatbelt. "You're making a mistake." He states, sadly.
"No, the mistake would be letting him throw away everything he's worked for." I reply, strongly.
"He's not going to see you leaving him as a favor, you're going to hurt him." He explains.
"You think I should let him violate his scholarship and get kicked off the team?" I ask, simply.
"No, I don't. You won't be doing anything. This is his choice to make, not yours." He points out.
"He'll choose me." I say, looking down at my hands.
"As he should." He agrees.
"I can't let him. Please, just take me to the bus station." I want to leave before I change my mind.
He lets out a frustrated sigh and starts the car, pulling out into traffic. Ten minutes later we're at the nearest bus station. I get out and retrieve my bags. Jacob hands me his phone. "So, I can call you and you can call me.
